Welcome I’m Bella DePaulo (PhD, Harvard, 1979). Welcome to my website. Here you can read about my life passions, beginning with the most passionate of them all, the study of people who are single and their place in contemporary American society. My book, Singled Out: How Singles are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After, is published by St. Martin’s Press. Click here to read more about it. I also write op-ed essays for newspapers and articles for scientific journals. I have another entirely different area of interest and expertise. For more than two decades, I have been researching and writing about liars and their lies. I described that work in dozens of scholarly papers, on many television shows, and in newspapers and magazines. In addition, I occasionally write political and social commentary. I am a contributor to The Huffington Post, and I write the Living Single blog for Psychology Today. I can also be hired to speak at your event. I would love to hear your personal stories and observations about singles and about the current cultural obsession with couples, regardless of whether you are single or coupled. I also welcome inquiries from scholars and from the press. * * * * SINGLES APTITUDE TEST (SAT) Send Me Your Brilliant and Witty Contributions I'd like to try to create some enlightenment about singles by way of humor. I want to create a new SAT – Singles Aptitude Test. If you are interested, I'd love your contributions or ideas for items.
Here's a sample item.
1. In Mona Lisa Smile, Julia Roberts, the new college teacher, arrives at the residence where she will be staying with the other female college professors. The person who greets her explains the rules for the coming year, including, “no hotplates and no male visitors.” What did Julia say in response? A. But I have a boyfriend! B. Not even if he is my brother? C. What if I get married? D. I don’t think I can go a year without a hotplate.

Thanks!
(By the way, the answer is D.) * * * * Election season is here and SINGLE VOTERS should rule! Read about it here. * * * * On September 28, 2007, The Chronicle of Higher Education published an essay written by Bella DePaulo, Rachel F. Moran, and Kay Trimberger, "Make room for singles in teaching and research."
